Jobs and the Economy

Jobs and the Economy:

Over the last three decades we’ve seen failed economic policies lead to widening inequality and stagnant wages. The cost of healthcare and education skyrocketed while benefits were trimmed and jobs shipped overseas. In corporate boardrooms and on Wall Street, executives prospered, while on Main Street the middle class crumbled and more Americans fell behind.

Somewhere along the way we lost our fundamental sense of justice and fairness—we exalted private greed, and we stopped thinking about the public good.

Now we need to correct course, and find our path forward. With the right policies we can get through these tough times, restore a sense of fairness, and lay the foundation for a strong and innovative future.

As your Senator, jobs and the economy will be my number one priority. I’ll focus my energy on creating jobs now, on putting the economy back to work for all Americans, and on investing in our future prosperity.

  • Create Jobs Today: I’m the only candidate that has a plan to unlock the potential of our economy by getting Americans back to work now. And I’m the only candidate who’s spent his career working on economic and community development, helping businesses create jobs in nearly every industry in NC. When the private sector won’t invest, the government needs to fill the hole. In Washington I’ll fight hard to put Americans to work, making the repairs our country needs and doing the jobs that will guarantee our future prosperity.

  • Invest in American Competitiveness: In the Space Race, we identified the competition, made the necessary investments, and reached the moon. In a global economy we face a new kind of competition. We must similarly make investments in education, infrastructure, and emerging industries in order to remain competitive and create future opportunities.

  • Provide relief and security for the middle class: Affordable healthcare, a path to savings, a stabilized housing market, and robust consumer protections are not too much to ask for – they should be staples of any just and prosperous economy. In Washington I’ll fight for these basic, necessary reforms that offer Americans the security and opportunity they deserve.

  • Hold Wall Street Accountable: The financial sector should function more as a productive engine of our economy that makes sound investments and supplies credit, and less like a casino that puts our whole economy at risk. Responsible regulation must ensure a productive financial sector that won’t ever again bring our economy to its knees.
