Environment and Energy
Our planet faces no greater threat than global climate change. Climate change poses a danger not only to our environment and ecosystems, but also to our national security, economy, and public health. We must act now to reduce global emissions, and to develop clean low-emissions technology, before it is too late and the damage becomes irreversible.
Some argue that we must make a choice between protecting our environment and providing for economic growth. But this is old logic, based on an outdated way of looking at the problem. Today it is clear that in order to have a strong economy and compete for new jobs in the 21st century, we must invest in alternative energy and clean renewable technologies.
I have made a central theme of my campaign my belief that we are on the threshold of a new revolution based on alternative energy, clean and green technologies, new materials and processes, and a low-carbon response to global warming. This revolution holds the promise not only of protecting our planet, but as serving as the source of new jobs and economic growth. As Senator I will work to position North Carolina and the United States as the leader in this economic and technological revolution.
In the U.S. Senate I will push for policies that:
- Finally allow the United States Energy Independence. We should not be dependent for our energy on unstable countries and corrupt regimes, like those found in the Middle East and Venezuela.
- Help create millions of new jobs with strategic investments to build a clean energy future. This will protect our environment and help to ensure we compete for the most important source of new jobs in the 21st century.
- Put a price on carbon so that we burn less of it, preventing further heating of the atmosphere and environmental catastrophe. I will push for an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050
- Invest in a Digital Smart Grid so that we can meet our 21st century energy needs. A Smart Grid is crucial for energy generation and capture, and efficient storage and distribution.
- Incentivize, remove barriers to, and provide support for environmental entrepreneurs, small business starts-ups, and triple bottom line companies. From my career I have seen that start-up companies and entrepreneurs are uniquely suited to innovate, develop new solutions, and create jobs. Unlocking the innovative spirit and potential of entrepreneurs will allow the U.S. to lead the way toward a Green Economy.
